Storm Kits Good Idea!

The recent ice storms and upcoming tornado season reminds us of the need for a basic storm kit to get us through at least 48 hours in case of loss of electricity. There should be a storm kit for every family member and here are some things to include:

Blankets or Sleeping Bags - One per person
Sturdy Shoes - One pair per person. In case of a tornado you want to make sure you and your family are wearing shoes sturdy enough to walk over any debris left by a tornado if you house is damaged.
Whistles - One per person to help locate all family members in case of separation.
Important Papers & Phone Numbers - Copies of insurance policies, health insurance cards, ID's, etc.
Cell Phone - Keep your cell phone handy and charged at all times. In case of a tornado be sure to take your cell phone with you to your designated safety spot in your house for calling emergency services in the event of injury.
Cash
Food - Two days of packaged meats, fruits, vegetables, canned or bottled juice, protein bars, baby and pet food.
Personal Items - Toilet tissue, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene items, baby items, paper towels, etc.
Water - Three gallons per person.
Prescription Medicines & First Aid Kit
Misc. - Non-electric can opener, flashlights, battery operated radio & batteries, propane for gas grill or cooking device, garbage bags, tarp, rope, etc.

Be sure to store your storm kids in waterproof containers and check them periodically to make sure all non-perishable items are still within their expiration date.
